On the Nature of Monsters
Wrong, Marfa Texas.
Recent realization:
A body without a soul is a zombie.
A soul without a body is a ghost.
These are the two primary monsters, though really they are the same thing: An incomplete person continuing to live.
It's a popular idea that we have souls separate from our bodies, and that in some sense, the soul is our true self, but if that were true, the ghost wouldn't be a monster (unless the person in question was already monstrous). The zombie, on the other (severed) hand, implies that without the soul, the body is evil and liable to do bad things to good people... but if that were true, no soul (except the monstrous ones) would allow itself to be born into such a prison.
So both ideas, while fun, are Wrong, and belong on display in this damn-near ghost town's storefront & gallery.
These are the kinds of things I think about when I wake up at 3 AM, choking because my throat is full of snot.
